Cross-country Skiing Trails and Snowshoeing:
The 92 square miles that make up the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park are a cross-country skiing paradise. Explore more than 87 miles of designated cross-country ski trails. Enjoy sweeping hilltop vistas of Lake Superior. Glide quietly through glades of thick hemlocks. See waterfalls transformed by the cold of winter.
Snowshoers looking for a true back-country experience will love the Porcupine Mountains. The 60,000-acre State Park combines with hundreds of thousands of acres of national forest lands to form one of the Midwest’s largest true wilderness areas.

No matter where you are in the upper Midwest, you’re less than a day’s drive away from a true wilderness destination. Getting to the Porcupine Mountains is easy. Below are directions from some major cities in the region along with a driving map.
Chicago – 7.5 hours:
Take I-94 to Milwaukee, then Hwy 141 north to Hwy 2. Take Hwy 2 west to Hwy 45
Des Moines – 10 hours:
Take Hwy 35 north to Duluth. Head east on Hwy 2 to MI-28, then east to MI-64
Detroit – 11.5 hours:
Take Hwy 75 to St. Ignace, then east on Hwy 2, north on MI-77, then west on MI-28 to Hwy 41 to Baraga, then west on MI-38
Duluth – 3 hours:
Travel east on Hwy 2 to MI-28, then east to MI-64
Green Bay – 5.5 hours:
Take Hwy 141 north to Hwy 2. Take Hwy 2 west to Hwy 45
Madison – 6 hours:
Take I39 to Wausau, then Hwy 51 north to Hwy 8. Take Hwy 8 east to Rhinelander, then Hwy 17 north to Hwy 45
Milwaukee – 7 hours:
Take Hwy 141 north to Hwy 2. Take Hwy 2 west to Hwy 45
Minneapolis – 6.5 hours:
Take Hwy 35 north to Duluth. Head east on Hwy 2 to MI-28, then east to MI-64
Downhill Skiing at Porcupine Mountains:
The Porcupine Mountains offer excellent downhill skiing. The Porcupine Mountains Ski Area is one of the top downhill skiing destinations in the Midwest. You’ll find 42 ski runs, offering a variety of challenges for all skill levels. The area gets 200 inches of snow each year, making it one of the most reliable downhill ski destinations in the region.
