Discovery Tandem Flights:
Hang gliding is as close to being a bird as you can get without being hatched. There’s no cockpit to separate you from nature and no roar of an engine. You’ll be able to feel the air tickling your face, to carve your wings through it, and often, to share it with eagles, Osprey and vultures. The views will make you understand why it’s called Lake County; the experience will make you understand why hang gliding is addictive.
Choose from a 2500 foot Discovery Flight Lesson, or opt for more airtime and the ultimate adventure and views with our mile-high flight. Our professional, certified, highly qualified instructors will tailor your flight around your wishes, whether you’re yearning for one that makes the Skycoaster seem tame or would prefer a peaceful, serene one. If the weather is right, you can see both Florida coasts, Downtown Disney and Epcot, Universal Studios, Orlando and Tampa. On special days you might even see a shuttle or missile launch from Cape Canaveral.
Relax!
On your tandem hang gliding flight, you’ll be paired with a highly qualified, USHGPA-certified tandem instructor, and will be attached together as well as hooked into the glider. Tandem hang gliders are specifically designed for the job and are certified by the Hang Glider Manufacturers Association. There’s no running involved, either. Since our tandem hang gliders have heavy-duty landing gear, your take off and landing will be on wheels.
No flying experience is necessary
A light sport airplane will tow you up to the desired altitude. Once you’ve released from the plane, you’ll be amazed at how quiet and peaceful hang gliding can be. Your instructor will show you how to fly the glider, teaching you the basics of how to turn, slow down and speed up. After these simple instructions, you’ll be able to take the controls – even if you have no prior flying experience whatsoever.
You don’t need strength or fitness to tandem hang glide, and almost anyone with a desire can fly, but some restrictions apply. Reservations are recommended but not required. Call 352-429-0213 for more information and reservations.

Flight Training:
Earn your wings
If you want to learn to fly a hang glider, Quest Soaring Center is the best place on the planet to do it. Our licensed instructors are focused on helping you to reach your goals, using proven, confidence-building teaching methods. We’re fun, we’re friendly, we’re safety-conscious, and most importantly, we are dedicated to your success.
The number of tandem flights required before soloing varies greatly with each individual. If you fly only once a month, it will take you a long time to progress; if you fly several times each morning and evening for successive days, it will happen much more quickly. If you have other aviation experience you’ll probably learn a little quicker, since you already understand concepts like ground speed and airspeed and how to set up an approach.
20 tandem flights is generally the minimum needed. Some students require more. Therefore, our lessons are available in packages, so you can tailor the number to your needs. You’ll earn your U.S. Hang Gliding Association’s Novice Hang 2 and aerotow ratings after several solo flights, when your instructor is confident that you have the skills and judgment to fly without direct supervision.
Advanced Training:
Advanced training is available with ace competition pilot Mitch Shipley.
Advanced lessons are by appointment and should be reserved well in advance. To ensure complete one-on-one attention, each instructor will work with only one to two students at a time. They combine detailed ground-school instruction with intensive flight training and are designed to help you reach your goals as quickly and as safely as possible. The format of the advanced hang gliding instruction will allow for as much flexibility and individuality as possible. Half-day and full-day custom lessons are available.
These lessons will be custom-tailored to work with your specific skills and experience level and take you quickly and safely in any direction you want to go – perfecting landing approaches and flare technique; pursuing advanced maneuvers and smooth controlled freestyle; mastering the art of thermaling; expanding your horizons with cross country flying; or pushing the limits of technical cross country racing.
Required Equipment
The following equipment will be necessary to participate in the advanced training:
• Intermediate (minimum) hang glider
• Harness
• Helmet
• Variometer and GPS
• Primary and secondary AT releases
• In-flight drinking water system
• Retrieval driver/ vehicle
