Surfing is a surface water sport in which surfers use the crest and face of a wave to ride back to shore. Surfing mainly takes place in the ocean but it can also be integrated into certain lakes and rivers as well. This sport has incorporated a number tricks that can be performed while riding the waves.

Different types of surfing include bodysufing, stand up paddle surfing, paipo boarding, bodyboards, longboarding, shortboarding, tandem surfing and sidewalk surfing (skateboarding). Other objects have been used to attempt to surf such as water skiis, wood boards, guitars, wakeboards, doors, canoes, kayaks, boats and much more. These are mainly for experimentation and fun because nothing works quite like the design of the surfboard.

Surfers who catch the wave on the shoulder often become an obstacle for the more experienced surfers who will catch the wave in the middle and work their way to the shoulder of the wave. Surfers can choose to do tow-in surfing to better match the speed of the wave. In this method, a personal watercraft tows the surfer in front of the wave.

Surfing - A surfer cuts on a wave

Surfing is more than a recreational activity for some; it’s a lifestyle. California and Hawaii offer the best wave conditions in the United States so the surf culture is most popular in those two states. Surfing is now a multi-billion dollar industry through the clothing and fashion markets.

Generally a wet suit is worn in colder waters since body temperatures drop after being exposed for an extended period. Shark attacks (in certain locations) can occur but the probability is very low.
